Miro is a video podcast down-loader which can be used to watch your favorite TV show. Its an awesome software where you can watch almost anything you like at your own time. Unlike classic TV you don't need to be free at a particular time. Because its already downloaded you can pause, fast forward, basically do anything you want with it.Watch this video for more details.

About Me
- ROSHANE NANAYAKKARA
- I'm a Sri Lankan, mechanical engineering student studying in Swinburne University of Technology, Australia. Although messing with mechanical stuff is my favourite past time I do spend quite some time messing around with PC's as well. I started messing around with ubuntu about a year back so I thought of making this blog and adding whatever I learnt so that newbies like me can hopefully pick up a thing or two. Please take note that most things i write on the blogs are what I picked up from the internet (I'll try to add the sources whenever possible) or what I learnt by trial and error. I am always willing to learn so please give your comments. Being decent while commenting wouldn't hurt :D

Customize your terminal
Lets face it...the standard terminal looks pretty ordinary when it pops up. Here's a small video I made to make it look better. Hope you like it. Enjoy.

Upgrade any version of Ubuntu Desktop
Press ALT+F2, a dialog will pop up. Type:

-c means: Check for new distribution releases (upgrades).
Some people will tell you to use -d as well.
-d means: Development release. So it will look for distribution releases that aren't stable yet, and offer to upgrade to it. Don't use it unless you're into beta testing, or want to upgrade your L(ong)T(erm)S(upport) release to a normal release.
The above is an extract from the webpage Upgrade any version of Ubuntu Desktop
gksudo "update-manager -c"And press run, like this:

An awesome PDF viewer using Wine.
Although ubuntu comes with a PDF viewer its functions are quite limited. When going through huge e-books there comes a time when u need to do stuff like underlining, writing a note etc where the default viewer falls short. PDF XChanger is an awesome software which is offered free of charge for windows users. But it works pretty well with linux using wine. So if you are interested in great pdf software for ubuntu here it is. It has a portable version as well so u can carry it along in your pendrive if u carry one.

How To Sync Files Outside Your Dropbox Folder
Sometimes there are folders that are important to us but too troublesome to put inside the dropbox folder. At times like that you can keep the content inside those folders synchronised by right clicking on the folder->choose make link->cut and past link in the dropbox folder. I've done so with my Documents folder and it makes it so much easier to keep saving items to my documents as everyone else does it but know that you can access your date from any PC that has an internet connection.

Play on Linux - The most user friendly program to install your windows software
I just installed playonlinux version 3.6 on my pc and installed office 2007. It works like a charm. Play on linux is a program based on the popular wine software. The code to install it on Ubuntu Jaunty(9.04) is given below. If you want to install it in any other version of ubuntu just replace jaunty with intrepid, karmic, etc. The good news for us Ubuntu users is that playonlinux will be in the ubuntu repositories starting from Karmic(9.10).
sudo wget http://deb.playonlinux.com/playonlinux_jaunty.list -O /etc/apt/sources.list.d/playonlinux.list
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install playonlinux I
chose only to use Word, Excel and Powerpoint because I hardly use any
office suite. Pics of Word and Powerpoint in action have also been
attached below for proof;)Play on linux is found in the games menu.If you want to access the folder where
playonlinux is installed go to Home Folder and choose "show
hidden files" on View. You will then see a folder called
".playonlinux". Enter the folder and click on the sub
folder "wineprefix". You will see all your installed
software there. One area that needs to be worked on is the print function which didn't work. Hopefully the future versions will have better integration with the Linux system.

Adding the Partition Editor that went missing in 9.04
All of us need to format our USB flash drives once in a while. Ubuntu 8.10 had a software called GParted which was pretty functional. But somehow that went missing in 9.04. How you add it is, go to System->Administration->Synaptic Package Manager and search for Gparted. Select Install Completely and Apply. It should be ok to work now. I find it pretty useful for partitioning USB drives and formatting them etc. Hope you do too.Cheers:)
First time with Dropbox on Jaunty
I was looking for an easy one stop online storage solution. I am already using google docs and 4shared. Google docs is pretty cool but it isnt 100% compatible with Microsoft Office yet. 4shared is great and gives 5GB of space but you need to go to their site and upload files as they don't have a desktop version for ubuntu. The great thing about dropbox is it is compatible with Linux, Windows and Mac. So you can have multiple PC's with different OS's syncing the same files with dropbox.
First go to System->Administration->Software Sources and add the two lines, one at a time to third party software. Check the Pic below.
Next copy and past these commands to the terminal at Applications->Accessories->Terminal
2.Update your packages list. Run “apt-get update“.
3.Install Dropbox "
4.There is a small hitch where Dropbox doesn't autostart with Jaunty. I searched the web and found that adding dropbox start -i as the command in System->Preferences->Startup Applications->Add had worked for a couple of people. Well it did so for me too:)
